According to a Sanskrit inscription found in Katra Keshavadeva, that in Vikrama Samvat 1150 A.D., when Maharaja Vijayapal Deva was the ruler of Mathura, a new temple built on the site of Shri Krishna's birthplace.
During the rule of Chandragupta Vikramaditya second temple was built and in 1017 and it was destroyed by Mohamad Gazni. According to a Sanskrit inscription found in Katra Keshavadeva, that in Vikrama Samvat 1150 A.D., when Maharaja Vijayapal Deva was the ruler of Mathura, a new temple built on the site of Shri Krishna's birthplace by Jajja. This temple was visited in the 16th century by Chaitanta Mahaprabu. Unorunately again the temple was destroyed by the Delhi ruler Sikandar Lodhi inthe same century. The fourth temple built by Veer Singh Dev Bundela of Orchha during the reign of Jehangir was destroyed by Aurangazeb in 1669. The present day idhgah occupies part of the Kesavdev temple complex. It is said that this temple faced the maximum fury of Muslim invaders from NW and had been damaged by Muslim Invaders Mohammed Ghazni, Sikander Lodi and Aurangzeb.
Vir Singh Deo during Jahangir’s time built the great temple of Keshava Rai at Mathura and a sum of thirty-three lakhs of rupees, it is believed, was spent on temple construction. The Dehra of Keshava Rai was one of the most impressive temples ever built in India and enjoyed the patronage of the Hindus throughout the land.
During the British rule in 1815, regarding temple land, there was a legal battle over the ownership between Muslim rulers and Hindu rulers. Finally it was settled in favor of the Hindu rulers of Benares. The Benares ruler bought the land from the East India company. It was through the intervention of Madan Mohan Malavya In 1944, a great patriot, the temple came under the management of Birla - Jugal Kishore Birla of Birla group. A private trust was formed in 1951 to which the rights of land were later transferred.

keen interest to fulfill the aspirations of the local people and finally the temple was built by 1965 at the cost of Rs. 15 million rupees. Now it is being run a private trust consisting of prominent members, besides Dalmia and Birla.
