Vrindavan, a sacred town resonating with the divine love of Lord Krishna and Radha Ji, houses several revered temples, including the historic Shri Jugal Kishore Temple. This temple, dating back 300 to 400 years, is one of the oldest in Vrindavan. Built from stunning red sandstone, the temple’s architecture radiates timeless charm, particularly in the evening, when the glow of lamps enhances its spiritual ambiance. Located near Jugal Ghat and close to the path leading to Shri Radhavallabh Temple, the temple’s serene surroundings add to its divine appeal.
Temple Highlights
The temple enshrines the deities of Lord Krishna and Radha Ji, depicted in their Jugal (divine couple) form. The vigrahas (idols) within the sanctum create a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Once a year, a grand palanquin procession carries Shri Yugal Bihari Ji through the streets, drawing devotees from far and wide.
Religious Significance
Among the many divine pastimes (Leelas) of Lord Krishna and Radha Ji in Vrindavan, the Leela of Shri Jugal Kishore Ji is uniquely captivating. According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, after Shri Krishna disappeared during the Rasa Leela, he reappeared to the Gopis at Ramnareti. Thereafter, Shri Radha Krishna bathed at Jugal Ghat, a sacred act that earned the deity the name Shri Jugal Kishore.
Vrindavan, renowned for its Krishna temples, also includes notable shrines like Shri Priyakant Ju Temple and Govind Dev Ji Temple. The Shri Jugal Kishore Temple remains a must-visit on any Mathura-Vrindavan tour for its historical and spiritual essence.
The childhood home of god Krishna, it is an important pilgrim center for the Hindus who come here from many parts of India. Sri Krishna an avatar of Vishnu was born in nearby Mathura, but had to be rescued upon his birth because his uncle and a tyrant ruler Kansa was after Sri Krishna to kill him. It was was prophesized that Krirshna, son of his sister would end Khamsa’s misrule and his ill-treatment of saints and sadhus or holy men. Growing up in Gokulam he grew up and finally killed Khamsa.
Temple Timings
The temple is open daily from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and reopens from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, inviting devotees to immerse themselves in its divine tranquility.
