Located  across the the Patna Junction is a popular  Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman known as  Mahavir Mandir.  This temple is so famous, millions of devotees visit this holy shrine every year.   Saturdays and Tuesdays being  traditional worshiping days of Lord Hanuman, no doubt, this temple is over crowded on these days.  This mandir trust - Shri Mahavir Sthan Nyas’ Samiti is believed to  have the second highest budget in North India after the famous Maa Vaishno Devi shrine, perhaps one of the richest trusts in north India. The Trusts runs  several welfare organizations like Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Mahavir Vaatsalya Hospital, Mahavir Arogya Hospital, etc catering to need of the rich and the poor. The temple's daily collections in the hundial (donation box) is huge - a whooping sum of Rs. 100000,00 per day. 

Mahavir Mandir  had a humble beginning in a room with a tiled roof  and as to the founder and date of inception, details are not available. It is said have been built in the colonial period. One version has it as per some records  this temple was originally established by Swami Balanand, a sage  of Ramanandi sect around 1730 A.D.  The small room - a place of worship  had a kerosene lamp that was lit in the evening. The temple became popular after the arrival of  Punjabi Hindu refugees here in the wake of  partition in 1947. Soon a small concrete building came up and in 1987, as more and more devotees began to visit this shrine,

that structure was pulled down and in that place came up a  huge marble temple.  The temple was rebuilt again in 1991 with  the idol of Sankat-Mochanin the sanctum. Also included are the images of other Hindu deities.  The nice idol of Goddess Saraswati in sitting position with a large veena in hands and a swan by the side  was enshrined  in the  Mahavir Mandir on Saraswati Puja day 2011.
