The antiquarian society of the Central Provinces felt the need of a museum in this area and on October 27, 1862 a committee with five British officials got into action in the implementation of a museum under the guidance of Chief Commissioner Sir Richard Temple. In this respect the Commissioner issued an order on May 7, 1863. The group decided to have a spacious building constructed for this purpose and one Captain Cobb. was entrusted with the job of designing the work. Richard Jenkins was the Resident at Nagpur from 1807 to 1826 CE.

The museum is housed in an imposing high-roofed Victorian-styled building with a main hall and several side rooms displaying many galleries. There is a separate section for the children. The gally on ores and minerals is an interesting. No doubt there is a section on fossils. The visitors can also enjoy documentary, film shows, and seminars on the museum grounds held on some important occasions.
