Location and Background The Sri Kalinga Narthana Perumal Temple is located in Oothukkadu, a quaint village about 14 kilometers from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. The Unique Idol of Sri Kalinga Narthana Perumal
The main deity, moolavar not Krishna, but a large stone image of Vedanarayana Perumal in a seated posture with Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi on either side. This temple's primary attraction is its Utsava Moorthy (processional idol), Sri Kalinga Narthana Perumal. This exquisite Panchaloka (five-metal alloy) idol is a captivating depiction of Lord Krishna’s divine playfulness during the Kaalinga Narthanam, the dance on the serpent Kaalinga. The 2.5-foot-tall idol shows Krishna as a mischievous five-year-old, gracefully poised with his left foot on the serpent’s hood, holding the serpent's tail in one hand, and raising his other hand in Abhaya Mudra to bless his devotees. Notably, the idol's left foot does not actually touch the serpent’s hood, maintaining a hairline gap and the scars resulting from the whipping of the tail are seen on Krishna’s ankles such details fascinates devotees and art lovers alike.

Historical Significance and Temple Development
According to legend, the idol was discovered by accident in the temple’s water tank. King Nalakonda Chozhan, captivated by its beauty, took a keen interest in the temple and undertook its renovation, thus establishing the temple as a prominent religious center. Inscriptions found on the eastern side of the main Rajagopuram (temple tower) detail its heritage and the royal patronage it received over time.
The Legacy of Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi
In the 17th to 18th century, the temple was further immortalized by the poet-composer Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi, who dedicated his life to worshipping Lord Bala Krishna here. Known for his devotional Carnatic compositions, Venkata Kavi is said to have felt such a deep connection with Krishna that he visualized the deity sleeping on his lap, avoiding even the slightest disturbance. His devotion and songs are an integral part of the temple’s spiritual aura.
Mythological Roots and Importance as a Parihara Sthalam
Oothukkadu’s name translates to “forest with a spring,” a nod to its mythological roots. Legend has it that sage Narada requested Krishna to create a water source here, forming a spring and a pond. It was near this pond that Narada witnessed Krishna performing the Kaalinga Narthanam, a vision that inspired him to ask Krishna to remain in Oothukkadu, blessing the village and its people.
Today, the temple is a significant Parihara Sthalam, where devotees come to seek relief from Sarpa dosham, Raghu dosham, and other afflictions. People visit the temple for blessings related to childlessness, delayed marriages, and business success, among other issues.
