Early Life and Ideals

Born on October 30, 1908, in Pasumpon, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, Sri Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Thevar was a renowned patriot and freedom fighter. Known for his unyielding devotion to Hindu spirituality and dharma, he championed the causes of social equality and national unity.

Association with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
A close ally of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Thevar supported Bose’s vision for an independent India. When Bose established the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) in 1939, Thevar joined as Deputy Chairman, helping to organize and strengthen resistance against British colonial rule.

Fight Against the Criminal Tribes Act

One of Thevar’s significant contributions was his campaign against the British-imposed Criminal Tribes Act (CTA) of 1871, which marginalized and labeled numerous communities in Tamil Nadu as "criminal tribes." His relentless efforts led to the repeal of the act, liberating many from systemic discrimination.

Temple Entry and Social Reform
Thevar played a key  role in advocating for Dalit temple entry. In 1939, he supported the historic entry of Dalits into the Madurai Meenakshi Temple led by popular Lawyer Vaidyanatha Aiyar , a milestone in Tamil Nadu’s social reform movement.

Legacy and Guru Pooja

Every year, Thevar Jayanthi, also known as Guru Pooja, is celebrated on his birth and death anniversary, October 30, in his village Pasumpon, commemorating his unwavering commitment to patriotism and social justice.
