Construction and Purpose

The Bell Tower appears to have been constructed during or after the British colonial period. The bell itself, donated by a British-associated company, might have been part of the broader colonial infrastructure or a local initiative tied to the Rock Fort's temples.

The Bell.

The big bell in the tower was reportedly cast in 1918 in the Nagapattinam railway workshop, which was under the South Indian Railway (SIR), a British private company that played a significant role in early railway development in southern India. The casting of the bell links it to the Great Southern of India Railway Company, which laid the first railway line in southern India from Nagapattinam to Tiruchirappalli in 1859.

Use and Legacy

When the writer visited the city in 1951whose elder brothers were College students here, on innumerable occasions he heard the huge bell chime every hour and the sound resonated the fort area.  Until the 1960s, the bell was manually rung daily in the evenings, its sound carrying across the Main Guard Gate area before traffic noise became prevalent. Over time, the bell fell into disuse due official careless that had led to  mechanical glitches.

Challenges in Documentation

No records or plaques provide definitive information about the Bell Tower's construction date, the builder, or its intended purpose. The donor, G. Grongton Loco and Carriage Company, mentioned in some references, could not be identified definitively, raising the possibility of transcription errors or incorrect attributions.

Historical Connections

The proximity to the Ucchi Pillaiyar Temple and the historical significance of the Rock Fort complex suggests that the Bell Tower may have served a religious or ceremonial function, such as signaling prayer times or marking special occasions.

Preservation and Interest

The Bell Tower, like many colonial-era relics in India, struggles for attention amid more prominent heritage landmarks. However, it holds a subtle charm and a connection to the city's rich history of colonial encounters, industrial progress, and cultural resilience.

If more historical research or local oral traditions could be tapped into, this Bell Tower's story might be further enriched. This article is based on https://www.navrangindia.in/2021/12/bell-tower-atop-rock-fort-complex.html
