The Namazhwar Moksham, a unique part of this festival, is observed on the last day of Vaikunta Ekadasi celebrations, particularly in temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, such as the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple and others following the Vaishnavite tradition.
Why is Namazhwar Moksham Observed on the Last Day
Namazhwar’s Role in Vaishnavism:
Namazhwar ( 8th century; fifth in the line of the twelve Azhwars). is one of the most revered Alwars (Vaishnavite saints) who composed divine hymns, collectively called the Tiruvaimozhi, glorifying Lord Vishnu. Among the Tamil Vaishnava saints - Azhwars, the most significant contribution was made by him. His prolific contribution includes 1352 pasurams among the 4000 in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. His theological and philosophical works related to Vaishnavism were compiled by Madhurakavi under four different headings. The gist of his work is simpe: He emphasizes surrender (saranagati) and devotion to the all-pervading God as paths to liberation. Vaikunta Ekadasi is deeply connected to these principles. |
