What is now called Mahatma Gandhi Road also known as MG Road in Bengaluru, India was famously known as South Parade during the Colonial period. Soon after independence, it was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi Road on 26 February 1948 in memory of Gandhiji, the apostle of nonviolence.

The building shown in the image was the Prince of Wales building situated on South Parade Road. It was named in honor of the Prince and Princess of Wales after his visit here with his wife on February 5th and 6th 1906. Both he and the princess of Wales stayed at the Residency. They were on a long visit to India. His trip to Bangalore was scheduled well before as part of his travel itenary. In 1911 the Prince came to India as George V with his wife Queen Mary to attend the Delhi Durbar, an unwanted extravaganza at the tax payers of India. Part of the financial burden fell on the Maharajahs and Nawabs. . The Gate Way of India, Bombay was specially built near the shore where the Brutish king and Queen had landed.
As for South Parade, Bengaluru, it was a nice landmark in those days with many businesses - many shops, departmental stores, movie theaters, cafes and restaurants, bookshops, etc, lined the street. Trees throwing shadows it was a sort of fashionable commercial place for the Europeans and many shops were owned by Europeans. M G Road continues to house several of the old names today.
Today M. G. Road, one of the busiest roads in the city is lined on one side with retail stores, food outlets, restaurants and many more. It has many office buildings, shops and theatres. It is also a home to many buildings and banks. There are two Metro stations on M. G. Road, the eponymous station and Trinity.
