The Sri Azhagiya Narasinga Perumal Temple in Ennayiram, a small village about 22 kilometers from Villupuram, stands as a testament to centuries of devotion to Lord Vishnu and the spread of Vaishnavism. This ancient temple, believed to be over 1,000 years old, is deeply intertwined with the life and teachings of the great Sri Vaishnavite saint, Sri Ramanuja. It is said that Sri Ramanuja, during his time, converted around 8,000 Jains into Vaishnavism here, further cementing its religious significance. Local tradition holds that the temple was built by the Chola king, Rajaraja I, and that it has been graced by the visits of renowned saints like Sage Ramanuja and Koorathazhwar.
The temple’s sanctum houses Lord Paramapathavasan along with his consorts, Sridevi and Bhoodevi, while the principal deity worshipped here is Lord Azhagiya Narasinga. The temple also houses a magnificent six-foot-tall idol of Lord Varahamurthy, adding to its spiritual and artistic heritage. Special pujas are performed on the auspicious Thiruvatirai Nakshatram day, drawing in devotees from across the region. The temple's visiting hours are between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM in the morning and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the evening.
Despite its long history, the temple has faced neglect over the years. One of the most heartbreaking issues is the damage to the Narasimha idol, with vandals having broken off its hands, rendering it unfit for worship. This damage highlights the vulnerability of the temple due to lack of proper protection and the unrestricted visits by vandals. The idol, once housed in its rightful place, has been relegated to a corner of the temple for over 400 years. However, in recent years, efforts have been made to restore the temple to its former glory, including the installation of a new Narasimha Perumal idol.
The restoration of the temple is now a priority for the local community, who are determined to bring back the temple's full spiritual and historical magnificence. The community's dedication to preserving this sacred space is evident in their efforts to repair and restore the damaged structures, including the installation of a new idol for the Narasimha deity.
Ennayiram can be easily accessed from Villupuram, with town buses regularly running to this location. This accessibility ensures that devotees and tourists alike can visit the temple to experience its spiritual aura and learn about its rich history. The community’s restoration work and ongoing efforts to protect the temple are crucial for preserving this important heritage site for future generations.
