Located in the misty, picturesque Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats near the Salem city is the Yercaud hill station about which we are familiar and it is a summer vacation site for the people of Salem and other adjacent districts. This famous hill station serves as a regular summer retreat for thousands of people. ''Yercaud'' is an anglicised name for Yeri Kadu meaning in Tamil forest-lake.
It is in the wooded area at an altitude of 1515 metres (4970 ft) above the mean sea level, and the highest point being the Servarayan temple, at 5,326 feet (1,623 m). The other reason is the prevalence of mild weather all through the year.
First explored by the Salem District Collector Montague Dundas Cockburn January 1789 - 28 September 1869) in the Madras Presidency, British India between 1820 and 1829, it was Gov. Thomas Monroe of the same Presidency (1819 -1826) spotted the prospects of the hill site with almost similar English weather condition . He encouraged the Scottish officer in the development of the hill station into a well-known summer retreat, hub of coffee plantations, etc. M.D. Cockburn, in 1829, was the first one to introduce coffee plantations and tried citrus fruits imported from South Africa.. Subsequently, he tried a small variety of apples and other hill-fruits. Today, these plantations here produce nutmegs, cloves, pepper, cardamoms and coffee. Also grown on the hill are trees like silver-oak, cypress along with the eucalyptus on the fringes.

A famous tourist spot nestled in the midst of greenery and serene ambiance is an old tea estate with a typical colonial bungalow called Tipperary Estate Bungalow. Built by a Troop Sergeant Major a relative of Charles Dickens (1787 -1859) a famous English novelist of the past era. This 1900 colonial type bungalow is set in a vantage point from where you can enjoy the clear vistas around the place, the tea estate and the serene beauty of the Shevaroy Hills (in Tamil Servarayan malai). At night you can gaze out the nightly city of Salem. Purported to be one of the early colonial bungalows on the hilly area, the army man Dickens and his family had settled here quietly. Over a period of time, the family expanded their coffee plantation operations.
They successfully ran the estate well for a pretty long time even after India's independence in 1947 till 1950s. Presently the estate and the buildings are well preserved. Coffee plantation activities are still going on here. Lots of people come here and stay in the cottages to share the colonial experience. The visitors will enjoy the cool fragrant gentle breeze gliding from the dense wooded areas.
