Designed in Maru-Gurjara temple architecture, native to Gujarat with elements of a haveli, resulting in a unique and intricate design, the temple was  constructed  at a time when this area was reeling under a severe famine. The noteworthy aspect is Hutheesing Kesarisinh jain had spent  about Rs.10 lakh in 1848(equivalent to ₹75 crore in 2023) to build it,  providing employment to hundreds of artisans for two years. Thus he made them  sustain their lives during the turbulent period. This was built to honor the 15th Jain Tirthankara, Shri Dharmanatha.

Above image: Hutheesing Jain temple,Ahmedabad,GJ, The 78 ft tall manastmbha  was built to commemorate the 2500th birth anniversary of Jain monk Mahavira.........

The chief architect, Premchand Salat, with meticulous care   blended traditional Maru-Gurjara temple architecture with elements of a haveli. This resulted in a  unique and intricate design that enhanced the look of the temple. Situated outside the Delhi Darwaza, the temple is constructed in white marble stones that  feature  exquisite impressive carvings. It is a nirandhara-prasada type of temple with no  ambulatory (pradakshina path in Hindu temples) passage. The west-facing structure stands firmly on a large platform, with a sanctum housing the marble idol of Dharmanatha, the fifteenth Jain Tirthankara.

The temple is spread over a sprawling courtyard, a mandapa surmounted by a large ridged dome, which is supported by 12 ornate pillars.Yet another distinctive feature is the  temple has three inner sanctuaries, each with its own shikhara, along with a grand assembly hall supported by twelve ornate pillars. The outer courtyard consists of a colonnaded cloister with 52 secondary shrines, each containing a deity’s image. The temple’s entrance porch exhibits haveli-style decorations, including carved balustrades, jaalis, and overarching balconies. The architectural beauty is further highlighted  by finely sculpted brackets and domes.near  the front entrance. Mahavir stambha 78 ft tall tower was recently added an its design is based on  the Jain Manasthamba and the Kirtistamba in Chittoor district of Rajasthan.  Some of the motifs used in the design remind one of the Sultanate minarets of the Mughal period

The other feature worthy of mention is the presence of  rainwater harvesting structure that carefully stores the rainfall below the ground. The rainwater harvesting system has been in use in many of the towns and cities in Tamil nad and the credit goes to the Late CM Ms. Jayalalitha who made it compulsory for every use to save rain water.

The temple remains an important religious and heritage site in Ahmedabad. Managed by a trust of the Hutheesing family, it continues to be a place of worship and a fine model of  Jain temple architecture in India.
