Pushkar temples and the lake: A sacred town on the fringe of the desert in Rajasthan state

Pushkar, a small yet significant city in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan, is  a well-known tourist destination in India. Mythologically and religiously  it one of the holiest places in India and devout visit the lake pushkar on pilgrimage to visit various old temples, including the one dedicated to God Brahma, one of the Trinity Hindu Gods in charge of creation.. The town of Pushkar along with the lake and ancient temples carry a vibrant cultural heritage.  yet another attraction here is the globally famous Pushkar Fair draws that attracts tourists including  overseas travellers.

Located in the Ajmer District of eastern Rajasthan, approximately 11 km from Ajmer city, Pushkar  is not that far from the Indian capital city New Delhi and is separated from Ajmer city (famous for Chisti, Sufi saint) by Nag Pahar (Snake Mountain), a small mountain range in Rajasthan.

The origin of Pushkar is an interesting one, of course steeped in mythology.  it is believed that Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, chose Pushkar as the site for a yajna (sacrificial ritual). Hence, since then, Pushkar has  three main sections: Jyaistha Pushkar, Madhya Pushkar, and Kanishtha Pushkar. During the British era, Pushkar was part of the Rajputana Agency.

Above image: Camal and Livestock fair  is held annually in the months between October and November. It is a 7 day colorful fair. Lots of people visit the the site of festival during the hair. There may be desert safari as well.  It is said to be a large trading fair for camels, horses, and cattle. The festival begins with a camel race and is followed by  songs, music, etc.exhibitions. religious ceremonies, Bhajans are part of the fair and the animals arrive long before the festivities......

Pushkar is popular for many  vibrant festivals and fairs that are tradition-bound.Tthe largest fair being  camel and livestock fair in the world, along with Nagaur Fair, Tejaji Fair, and Blue Lotus Festival. These festivals, along with  desert safaris in the Thar Desert and  the city's religious importance and uniqueness , make Pushkar an active  center of spirituality and cultural heritage. At the centre of the celebrations is a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma (the creator), about which all the religious festivities are partly focussed

Around Pushkar lake there are  more than  400 Hindu temples with 52 bathing ghats, for the visiting pilgrims to bathe in the lake and change the dress.   Jagat Pitta Shri Brahma Temple, one of the few temples dedicated to Lord Brahma in India,  Savitri Temple, Varaha Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s Varaha avatar, Apteshwar Mahadev Temple, a revered Shiva temple, Gurudwara Singh Sabha, a significant Sikh pilgrimage site, Sri Sawai Bhoj Temple, and Gautama Maharishi Temple. 

Pushkar Lake, a sacred water body where pilgrims take holy dips, Savitri Temple, offering panoramic views of Pushkar, Varaha Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s Varaha avatar, Apteshwar Mahadev Temple, a revered Shiva temple, Gurudwara Singh Sabha, a significant Sikh pilgrimage site, Sri Sawai Bhoj Temple, and Gautama Maharishi Temple. Apart from temples, desert safaris in the Thar Desert are a popular activity for tourists. Tourists may enjoy  the breathtaking sunset views over the Aravalli Mountain Range and the small sand dunes around Pushkar that add add to its charm.

Pushkar is well connected to major Indian cities and the nearest airport is Jaipur Airport,about 150 km away, and the closest railway station is Ajmer Railway Station, which is well connected to connects to major Indian railway stations.  The town also has a well-developed road network with frequent buses and taxis available from Ajmer and Jaipur. A visit to Puskar where spirituality blends with Rajasthan's long held culture and ethos will never disappoint the tourists.
