The Sri Rajagopalaswamy temple at Mannargudi, TN is  massive  made of hard stone and has an amazing architecture in typical Dravidian style. It   is a testimony  to the confluence and harmony of Chola and Nayak styles, spanning centuries of expansion in the past. Constructed on  a vast 33 acres acres of land in the center of the town, this ancient Vishnu temple features 16 imposing gopurams -  the main eastern Rajagopuram  (192 ft tall). Seven prakarams (circumambulatory paths) outer spacious courtyards, around  the sanctum,  24 shrines and seven mandapams, (halls) with richly ornate sculptured stone pillars, supporting the ceilings. The strange creatures hewn on the pillars are Yali.  Among them, the thousand-pillared hall, close to the sanctum-garbhagriha, showcases the Thanjavur Nayak ruler Achyuta Deva Raya's  architectural grandeur and design style.
