This 17th century Worli Fort, was built by the early British colonists  in 1675 in Bombay (Mumbai),  as it served as a major strategic coastal defense outpost, guarding the northern approach to the Mumbai islands and overlooking the Mahim Bay. Built by the British East India Company,  the primary purpose of this Worli fort with well-planned defensive features was to to defend against sea route attacks and pirates.  On the busy and important sea routes it was a menace to guard the ships in the open oceans against the pirates.  The fort's location on the tip of the Worli peninsula, overlooking Mahim Bay, made it a crucial defensive point for the English company that was operating many cargo ships across the Arabian sea to various destinations. Worli Fort is one of three forts overlooking Mahim Bay, the others being Mahim Fort and Bandra Fort.

During this period. Mumbai was an archipelago of seven islands (which was reclaimed later as part of expansion of Mumbai city). The fort successfully defended the foreign invaders as well as well-equipped pirates. Hence the fort was carefully designed to include defensive features to repel invaders from the seafront.
