St. Sebastian Latin Church of Thoppumpady, Ernakulam, Kerala: A Historical Portuguese church - brief review

Across India, there are countless old churches   constricted by the  European colonists like Portuguese, French, Dutch and English, etc centuries ago. Among them, most of the early  Portuguese  churches built by the jesuits are located in Goa and along the Malabar coast of Kerala state  because they established their trade settlements in these coastal areas. to access spices, etc.  Most of them are fairly  preserved and some  need to be periodically repaired and restored as they are all vestiges of past colonial era.  One among them is San Sebastian Latin church of Ernakulam city, Kerala.  

St. Sebastian Church, is one of the oldest churches in the ancient diocese of Cochin, which is the first Latin Diocese in Kerala of SW India. Historical documents state that the church was established by renovating the old church of St. James which stood here during the 16th Century. This historical church is near Ft, Kochi and the new bridge built recently.

The materials employed in the construction of the church are mainly laterite and wood. The walls were built with large laterite blocks measuring nearly 1 metre, using lime as mortar and which were then plastered . The Altar facing the Vembanattu lake is domical in shape.
In 1833 the parish was founded and the church was constructed in the year 1870. about the design, Certain Portuguese documents  mention  that, the design style is close to the model of The  preexisting (16 century)  St. James' Church, which was constructed in Jesuit style.
