At a distance of 8 km from Shimla Railway Station, 7 km from Shimla Old Bus Stand, Dorje Drak Monastery, also known as TDAC Nyingmapa Monastery is located at Kasumpti, Shimla.

Dorje Drak Monastery  is a famous tourist place in the city. It is a beautiful Buddhist monastery that displays the prevalence of Tibetan culture in the state and is set in a serene, quiet environment. No urban ugliness around.. The monks meditating in the monastery is quite a sight to watch. The calm ambiance of this place is just overwhelming and is a delight for the visitors The atmosphere is conducive to  seeking moments of tranquility and peace of mind. It is a great place for those who want to be away from urban din and madness. Dorje Drak monastery is being  run by the Tibetan exiles who have been in India since  1960s.

Considered as one of the biggest monasteries of the Nyingmapa School, Dorje Drak Monastery, was established  by  His Highness Kyabje Taklung Tsetrual Rinpoche. He was the head of Dorje Drak monasteries in India  and made up his mind to set up this temple at Shimla and the mountainous area was most suitable for this purpose. When the Chinese  government invaded and took over Tibet, they destroyed the original Monastery  and banned the religion. This forced  His Highness Rinpoche and other religious leaders to migrate from Tibet in 1959 to breathe fresh air and start their religious life afresh.

The building is a good example of perfect Tibetan architecture which is characteristic of solid square and rectangular plan. The structure is most suitable for the Himalayan region.This monastery was built  in 1984.

Every year, during May the  popular Hemis festival of Tibet is celebrated here in  honor of Guru Padmasambhava. This monastery is visited by countless devotees and tourists every year.
