Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple: Kerala's Dakshina Palani
The Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Haripad, Kerala, is one of the most significant and largest temples dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya Swamy in the state. The temple was consecrated on the Pushya nakshatra in the month of Makara, and it is believed that Lord Vishnu, in the guise of a saint, performed the consecration. This sacred act earned the place the name Harigeethapuram, which eventually became Haripad. The temple’s foundation day is commemorated annually in a grand three-day celebration.
Architectural and Historical Significance
In Malayalam year 1096, a fire mishap struck the temple, but both the golden flagpost and the Koothambalam miraculously survived without damage. During the reign of King Sree Chithira Thirunal Rama Varma, the temple was renovated, and the golden flag mast was reinstalled, restoring its former glory.
The temple structure includes four gopurams (ornate entrance towers) with a dhwajastambha (golden flag mast) on the eastern side.
