The Navlakha Temple, Ghumli of Gujarat, an example of ornate Maru-Gurjara architectural grandeur

The Navlakha Temple in Ghumli, Gujarat, is a striking example of Maru-Gurjara architecture (also known as the Solanki style), built during the 11th century under the Solanki dynasty. This temple (also called Sun temple), dedicated to Lord Bal Krishna (infant Krishna), showcases intricate craftsmanship that reflects the region's rich artistic and religious heritage. The name “Navlakha” refers to the estimated cost of construction, with “Nav” meaning “nine” and “Lakha” referring to “one hundred thousand” kori, an ancient currency.

The temple features exquisite sculptures and carvings depicting Hindu mythology, including significant episodes from Lord Krishna’s life. Its stunning torana (ornamental archway) is particularly admired for its detail and artistic significance. Navlakha Temple is one of five major temples in the Ghumli region built during the Solanki dynasty, alongside other renowned temples like the Somnath Temple, Nageshwar Temple, Dwarka Temple, and Dakor Temple.

The temple complex consists of a central shrine surrounded by smaller shrines, each adorned with ornate carvings. The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha), a covered pradakshina path (circumambulatory path), and a large mandapa (assembly hall) supported by eight-sided pillars are key features. There are intricate sculptures in niches, and the structure has balconies on three sides. The back wall of the temple famously depicts two elephants locked in a fierce battle with their trunks.

Interestingly, the temple was originally dedicated to the Sun God and is the oldest sun temple in Gujarat, boasting the largest temple base (uagati) in the state. Though the Kirti Toran, a once grand entrance arch, is now lost, the remaining structure continues to impress visitors with its architectural grandeur. The temple also houses images of various deities, including Brahma-Savitri, Shiva-Parvati, and Lakshmi Narayan. Outside the main temple there is a shrine  dedicated to Ganesha, popularly known as Ghumali Ganesha Temple.

Navlakha Temple has been open to visitors throughout the year, but winter (October to February) is considered the best time to visit due to the pleasant weather. During this period, cultural and religious festivals like Diwali, Makar Sankranti, and Krishna Janmashtami are celebrated with great fervor at the temple. The Archaeological Survey of India began restoration efforts in 2011 to preserve the temple and develop the site as a tourist destination.

Ghumli is accessible by road, rail, and air. It is located approximately 45 km from Dwarka, 60 km from Jamnagar, and 350 km from Ahmedabad. The nearest airport is in Jamnagar, from where taxis can be hired to reach Ghumli.
