The Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, an iconic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is a popular one.. Originally built in the 6th or 8th century CE, it underwent significant renovation in the 18th century under King Marthanda Varma, the founder of the modern Travancore kingdom. Above image: The legend has it  the vault was locked by using “NAGA BANDHAM” Mantras by the  Tantries / pundits  during the reign of King Marthandavarma in the 16th century. The door to such a vault can only be opened by highly learned pundits  who are familiar with the concept  of removing “NAGA BANDHNAM” or ‘NAGA PASAM’ by chanting a very sacred and difficult “GARUDA MANTRA”.............

A significant discovery was in 2010 when six hidden chambers, labeled A to F, were accidentally found within the temple premises. These chambers, untouched for centuries, were known to hold immense treasures accumulated over more than a thousand years from donations by kings, nobles, and devotees. In 2011, under a Supreme Court order, five of the vaults were opened, revealing a mind-boggling collection of ancient gold coins, jewelry, and artifacts. The inventory was done and it was estimated the treasure's value was over over $22 billion, excluding its historical and antique worth at that point of time. Among the riches, Vault A contained 2,000 pounds of ancient gold coins and a magnificent golden throne adorned with diamonds and precious stones.

Four of the vaults, C, D, E, and F, were routinely opened every year by the temple priests  to take out items for use in special ceremonies, which were deposited back afterward. As for the rest of the chambers: they knew they had been closed .for centuries and feared what might happen if they were opened. When communist led government wanted to open the Vault B Royal family member Sri Aditya Verma  stated, "It is a sacred and a secret place. It is said that there is a passage from this Vault B that leads to the sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum). Why should it be exposed to the public? And we have heard so many stories about the consequences of opening it," He said, we are not opposing the SC'order, however we would like to state that 'Thanthri advised us against opening the Vault. People's movement will only disturb the sanctity of the chamber and that is not advisable,"

Vault B, however, remains unopened due to its profound religious and mythological significance. Temple priests and devotees believe it is intricately linked to the main deity of the temple, Lord Padmanabha. Reports suggest that Vault B has three doors: one wooden, one iron, and a third made of iron with engravings of two large serpents guarding the entrance. This door, uniquely crafted without a lock, is believed to be sealed with mystical powers. According to tradition, it can only be opened by correctly chanting a specific mantra by a qualified tantric priest. Priests assert that the vault contains not just material wealth but also ancient secrets and profound knowledge of the universe.

If the vault was opened amidst restrictions using modern techniques, the result would lead to catastrophes, legend has it that more than  a century ago, this fertile region faced with a severe famine, temple officials had tried to break open the chamber, but stopped on hearing what sounded like rushing water.

The portals of Vault B remained locked despite all efforts made by the committee to open it. Of all the six vaults, the Bharatakkon Kallara or Chamber B is believed to be deeply rooted to God Padmanabhaswamy Who is sleeping on the coiled bed of hooded Adishedha (Serpent).
