Lord Arthur Wellesley's Bungalow, close  to  Thalassery  Fort  in Kerala, is a vestige of early colonial period under the East India Company, Set in a calm and tranquil site that  was once owned by the colonial administrator of Madras Presidency  T. H. Baber, the then Sub-Collector of Malabar. This bungalow was built on a model followed in Bengal (the birth palace of Bungalows in the colonial period) for Wellesley  (later Duke of Wellington) for his sojourn here.

What made Wellesley come to this part of Malabar?  He had a significant presence in Kerala, particularly in Wayanad, during the colonial time,  Arthur Wellesley an Irish-born soldier of the British Army and  brother of the then British Governor General  Richard Wellesley (Marquees Wellesley) was  asked to command the British army to   against the resistance of Pazhassi Raja, a local ruler who opposed the East India Company.   He was the commander of the English army that confronted Pazhassi Raja in the Cotiote War (1793-1805). In spite of his careful  planning and strategies, Wellesley could  make only futile attempt to catch the local ruler whose army men fought bravely, adopting Guerrilla attacks on the English men as the terrain was a thick wooded mountainous area. Subsequently, he left India for good and was later called the Duke of Wellington. His fame became part of world history when he decisively won the war against Napoleon Bonaparte  at Waterloo in 1815.  philaindia.info

Th wide open space around the site was converted in a Cricket play ground and Wellesley used to play Cricket with his collogues whenever he got time off between tight official work.  Though official records are not available it was in this place Wellesley and others taught the local people how to play the game that in the last several decades a famous and money-spinning sports in India and abroad. Thus he slowly nurtured the growth of Cricket in this part as a medium of recreation and entertainment

The colonial  bungalow was named after him to honor him for having made Cricket, exclusively an English game, popular in this SW part of the sub continent.  The Bungalow is now the official residence of the District Sub-Collector  and is located in a serene, tranquil surrounding.
