The main deity, made of stucco, is in a seated pose with upper hands holding the conch and discus, while the lower right hand abaya mudra (to grant blessings) and the lower left hand beckons worshippers. The processional image, Niharil Mugil Vannan, is standing, holding the conch and discus, with the right hand in a gesture of fearlessness and the left resting on a mace. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped here as Kuzhaikadha Nachiyar and Thiruppavai Nachiyar in separate shrines.
Pandyan ruler Koon Pandian in the 12th century CE helped settle roughly 12 Vaishnava families from the Cauvery Delta region who not only formed the core of this small settlement, but were also assigned to take of the temple, pujas, festivals, etc.
A notable feature of this temple is the location of the Garuda shrine to the side of the main deity in the Maha Mandapa, instead of the usual position directly in front of the sanctum. This is attributed to Lord Vishnu's fondness for watching children play, sing, and dance, leading him to request Garuda to move aside so that he can see them without any hinderance.
The temple contains several inscriptions, including one from the reign of Rajaraja Chola I (11th century AD), another from the 13th century mentioning the place as Ten Thirupper, and one stating that the Sayana mandapa was built by Krishna of Ten Thiruppavai. This temple is also one of the Navagraha Sthalams associated with Shukra (Venus), and follows the Pancharatra Agama in its worship practices. The main deity is enshrined under the Badra Vimanam.
