Murud Janjira Fort is one of the most fascinating island forts in India, renowned for its strong fortifications and it has a history of never being conquered by competing powers. Located off the coast of Murud in Raigad district, Maharashtra, this fortress is a testament to the military prowess of the Siddis, who ruled the region for centuries. Architectural Features: The fort is built on an oval-shaped rock in the Arabian Sea and spans approximately 22 acres. It has 19 bastions, still standing strong, housed heavy cannons that played a crucial role in defending against enemy attacks. With wide open space, the defense forces have wide open clear firing range and the approaching enemy troops can be tackled easily. The single entrance, adorned with Arabic inscriptions, is strategically designed to remain hidden from approaching enemies. Inside the fort, remnants of a palace, mosque, granaries, and soldiers’ quarters can still be seen. The palace served as the residence of the Siddi Nawab. A notable feature is the freshwater lake within the fort, a rare find in sea forts.The European colonists and the Marathas made vein attempt to control the front from the Siddhis. Siddhis were confined to only Janjira, Gowalkot, and Anjanvel in Maharashtra, with their power greatly reduced. in spite of it, Janjira fort remained unconquered until it became part of the Indian Union in 1947.
Visiting the Fort Access: The only way to reach Murud Janjira Fort is by boat from Murud town. The boat ride offers stunning views of the fort and surrounding seascape. Timings: The fort is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Entry Fee: Free; however, boat ride charges range from INR 50 to 300, depending on the size of the boat Tour Duration: Exploring the fort takes approximately two hours.
