Above images: The famous “Aazhi Ther”(ratha) of Sri Thyagarajaswamy temple of Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu is supposedly the largest in Asia. To push it forward giant ropes four in number tied to the chariot (each rope with a diameter of 21 inches, length, length about 425 feet-total weight of four ropes roughly 4 tons are needed along with two heavy weight Bulldozers pushing the chariot from the back side.Enough time is need to prepare the canopy on top of the chariot and the specified images and other decorations at proper places as per temple norms........
It is a grand spectacle in this part of the Cauvery Delta district in which a massive ratha (chariot) weighing more than 300 tonnes and fitted with iron wheels and hydraulic breaking system (specially made by the BHE, Tiruchirapalli), was carefully pulled along the four broad car streets by the devotees amidst chants of “Aaroora, Thyagesa” that ranted the air drenching with bhakti.......![]() |

The chariot run took place on the 7th of April (on the Aayilya nakshatram in Tamil month Panguni) an auspicious day as per Tamil Calendar. On the same day the chariot was brought back to the shed near the temple, one of the largest in south India .

This Therottam is part of the annual temple festival that commenced as usual with customary temple flag hoisting on March 15 (on the Hastha nakshatram in Tamil month of Maasi). The giant wooden car, in which the decorated idols of the “utsava moorthy” (processional deity) of Sri Thyagarajaswamy was placed on April 6 (Sunday) night and was taken out its deck on the ‘Keezha Ratha Veedhi’ (East Car Street) in the Monday following- Monday morning by the devotees for the therottam.
