Gandikota is an important historical and Archaeological site  near Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.Historic village and fort located on the right bank of the Penna River, efforts are currently being underway to secure Gandikota’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural, historical, and also geological importance.

A protected monument under the ASI (the Archaeological Survey of India), an important geomorphological feature here is the narrow canyon formed between the Erramala hills and the river. The river, at this point, flows through a deep and narrow gorge barely 100 meters wide, giving Gandikota its unique landscape For millions of years the the river cut the terrain and shaped anice canyon. The word "Gandi," meaning gorge, owes its origin to the the narrow canyon impart a unique landscape. The place is roughly 15 km from Jammalamadugu town. This naturally formed structure as a result the action of the Pennar river for several centuries is almost comparable to the Grand Canyon of part Arizona  shaped by the Colorado river for million of years.

A mile deep canyon unmatched in the incomparable vistas it offers visitors from both north and south rims and across the vertical section one can observe the entire column of early geologic formation cut by the Colorado river..  The Pennar River over a million years or so  carved the pink granite rock (Hypersthene rock)  of Erramala Hills and formed Gandikota Canyon by actions of erosion -side cutting and under cutting the ground. What we see now is a spectacular natural formation!

About  the fort, it dates back to 1123 CE when it was first developed as a sand fort by Kaka Raja, a subordinate of Ahavamalla Someswara I, the Kalyani Chalukya ruler. From 1239 to 1304 CE, the Kakatiya dynasty ruled the region through their local chieftains. Under the Pemmasani Nayakas,  Gandikota rose to prominence they  transformed it into a formidable stronghold with robust sand stone walls stretching as long as 5 mile with  strategic defense features  to safeguard against enemy attacks.  Subsequently,  the  Golconda Sultanate under the Qutub Shahi rulers took over fort  during their time they added  Islamic architectural features  to the existing fort.

What is unique about this place is Gandikota holds geological significance as well, featuring ancient sedimentary and metamorphic rocks rocks like the Gandikota Quartzite, part of the Chitravati Group within the Cuddapah Supergroup. THe famous Gondwana formation is named after the Gond tribes of this region and other parts). 

A 16th-century copper plate inscription discovered by historian Tavva Obul Reddy has provided further insights into the fort’s history. The famed Telugu poet Vemana is believed to have lived in the Gandikota region for a short period. The French traveler and diamond merchant  Jean-Baptiste Tavernier also visited the site during his journeys through the Deccan. The Golconda kingdom, then that included the part of alluvial deposit of Krishna river near Gunter was once a site of diamond mining activities, particularly, the Kollur mines produced many of the famous diamonds in the world centuries ago such as Koh-i-noor, Sanchi, Orlov, etc.  Now, they have become defunct.
