The Jagdish Temple  has a two story Mandapa (hall) linked to a two storey  Pradakshina path (saandhara)  or  a covered ambulatory path with  sanctum. The mandapa has another storey built  within its pyramidal samavarna (bellroof). Over the sanctum there is a  hollow clustered spire with two more, nonfunctional stories. No body knows as to why these non functional stories are built. This temple is the largest in Udaipur.

As the temple is on a raised platform, the visitors have to climb to reach the temple entrance. Several visitors to this this site are of the opinion that this temple is an excellent example of  Hindu Iconography,. Along with tall impressive 79ft steeple the 3 story structure made of stone offers a grand and impressive look.  Maharana Jagat Singh built the temple in 1651in a grand manner with innumerable ornate carvings, following a mix of  Māha Māru or Māru-Gurjara architecture. The charitable Mahrana had spent Rs. 1.5 million ($22023. 21)  in 1651 to build this temple. But in 1680, Mogul ruler Aurangzeb's forces attacked Mewar, leading to the partial destruction of the Jagdish Temple in Udaipur  which was later rebuilt in 1723. The Mogul army withdrew their attack because of dry and parched condition of the area during that time.

Enshrined in the sanctum is Sri Krishna (Lord Jagannath) carved out of a monolith black stone, The ubiquitous image of Garuda as in all Vishnu temples across India is also here, but it is out side the temple brass-plated. Godas Ganesha, Surya, Shiva and Goddess Shakti have shrines locate around the main shrine.

There are many festivals celebrated here like Sri  Krishna Jayanthi, etc. Among them the most popular and crowd pulling festival being the annual Rath Yatra.
