St. Sebastian Church located in a quiet village Madathattuvilai of Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, in the southern most tip of the Peninsular India is a Catholic church that came up in 1890. It is neither a massive, richly embellished attractive structure nor does it possess huge ornamental prayer hall and rich altar to be proud of. It is not a colonial church either as many of the churches across India are. The village itself a small one, not quite well-known outside of this district. Centuries ago Friars chose Madathattuvilai hamlet and adjacent areas to begin their their pastoral ministry for the people.

In the area of eye-donation - the most significant among donations, both the young church members and the villagers are following a different path. The Church has been doing eye-donation in a well organized professional way right from reaching out to the villagers and help them with the process of eye donation. Apart, the group helps speedy retravel of organ by a medical team from nearby cities like Tirunelveli.

When a death occurs it is announced by tolling the church bell. The trained youtha approaches the family and prepares them for eye donation (eyes of the deceased person must be harvested with in 6 hours from death). A medical team from nearby Tirunelveli arrives and removes the cornea and replaces the eyes with artificial ones that look similar.The entire process takes place in an organized way with full consent from the family.
Way back a few years ago as many as 229 residents of Madathattuvilai made eye donation over a period of a decade. The church focuses on spirituality, quality Education, health and social services, particularly among the poor.
St. Sebastian Church Festival lasts for ten days and draws crowds from surrounding areas for the music, drama and fireworks that add color to this religious event. The festival dates are based on the St. Sebastian Feast (20 January); i.e. 20 January between the 3rd day to 8th day of the festival.
