The church is about six miles (10 km) East of  Panaji, Goa’s state capital. The church had a humble beginning, became a small church in 1521; consecration took place only in 1602. To accommodate more worshippers, the current church was built in 1661 carefully using a blend of different European designs.  Its exterior decoration is in the simple Tuscan order, but its interior, especially the main altar has rich  Baroque with Corinthian features.

In 1964, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had set up a
museum in the  convent, contiguous to the church. The museum focuses on Goa's rich history, nice paintings, valuable artifacts, etc.,  that are essential for the younger generation to know.
